A LESSON BEFORE DYING

by

Ernest Gaines

This is a text about a young black teacher struggling to define himself in the challenging mileux of the American South in the 1940's. Grant Wiggins longs to escape the constrictions of The Jim Crow Laws that dictate his every move, and he has the means to do so. However, he is tortured by a sense of responsibility that he does not want to feel and a task that he does not want to perform. Before you read the moving story of Grant Wiggins and his unlikely pupil, Jefferson, you should know a few things about how life was defined for an intelligent young black man living in the "quarter" outside of New Orleans in the mid 1940s.
